Road Trip in Bangkok - Wat Krabue

If you are in Bangkok and you want an escape from the noise and pollution, a little know trail along the coast makes for an interesting road cycling trip for an afternoon.  Located around the Rama 2 area outside Bangkok, South West of the city centre, an ideal place to start is Wat Krabue, where you can park your car and stock up on refreshments.

The Wat itself is quite interesting, there is a rather macabre pile of buffalo skulls outside and the monk has an impressive collection of Mercedes-Benz cars apparently donated to him over the years.  Some of the cars look over 40 years old, all of which are parked around the grounds of the Wat.

From the Wat, it is a 10km cycle along Thanon Khun Thian, which is not especially interesting, however the traffic is quite light and there is a designated cycling lane unlike most other roads around Bangkok.  The road is well paved and there is no elevation therefore any level of fitness would suffice for the ride to the coast.

As you approach the coast you pass over various klongs, many of which are actively used as water highways with street lighting and signs.  There are also many seafood restaurants along the way up to this point all of which are very popular with Bangkok locals on weekends looking to escape and enjoy cheap seafood.  As you approach the sea you will start to see more mangrove areas as the cultivated land gives way to briny water unsuitable for farming.

Eventually you will need to take a small turning off the main road and follow some footpaths to reach an elevated wooden path through some more dense mangrove.  This is quite difficult to find but you can refer to the map below for reference.  This is the prettiest section of the trail and you can see various flora and fauna within the mangrove.  The wooden platform is well maintained, however caution is required if wet as it becomes very slippery and there is a 6ft drop off in places.

You will reach the sea after 2km along this platform, and there is a small platform to relax or take a picnic, from here you can head back the same way or there are many other small trails in the area waiting to be explored!  You can contact us for information on cycling in Thailand or if you are looking for a cycling day trip in Thailand we offer a directory of trails, GPS coordinates and photos.

Downhill MTB in Khao Yai Da

Khao Yai Da is not a name most people will be familiar with, although anyone who has been to Koh Samet is likely to have seen the hills behind the pier, which is the location for this great downhill track.

This is a highly technical course not suitable for beginners, unless you want to spend much of the time pushing around jumps, steep drops and large boulders, skilled mountain bikers can complete it in just 3 minutes, the standard rider in around 10 minutes.

The trail starts by a small pond which is good for parking cars and there is also a small shelter.  A steep descent will take you along a road on course for the Channel 5 and Channel 3 TV masts on the top of the hills.  Follow the road to the right when you reach a junction, which is signposted for Channel 3 and you are soon at the start of the trail.

Riders are greeted with a huge jump at the start of the trail, around 8ft in height you will need to clear a dried up stream bed to clear the other side - about 3metres in width, should you land this then a sharp turn is required unless you want to disappear into the jungle!

There are several other large jumps to navigate through the jungle, eventually you will come out near the pond by the car park.  The gradient remains steep throughout.  Although well known amongst cycling enthusiasts in Rayong, chances are you will have the place to yourself giving you a chance to brush up on your cycling skills!

ATV & MTB Club 11 - Bike Track in Bangkok

A great little off road cycling track is located at the army base on Phahonyothin road, opposite soi 49 and soi 51.  You will have to leave some ID with the army guards at the entrance and the bike track is short drive through the army grounds at the back of the complex.  You can park your car near the restaurant and BB gun area and from here cycle a couple of hundred metres to the start of the trail.   The price is 100 THB for non members to use the bike trail or if you are a member (300 THB per year) the price is 50 THB.

Although short at around 3km the track has been well designed with lots of banked corners, jumps and hills to test your mountain biking skills.  A lot of concentration is needed as you weave in and out of the trees whilst avoiding various obstacles such as sand traps, ponds, tree roots and ditches.  The track is quite well known but you may end up being the only person using the track allowing you to relax at your own pace, on occasions though you will see people pushing as hard as possible to beat their personal best times!

It is short enough to complete fairly quickly but maybe people simply do a few laps and change the route to make it more interesting.  In terms of getting a quick mountain biking fix in Bangkok it is hard to beat Club 11.  Back towards the car park you can wash your bike off and there is a small restaurant to relax, there are also showers to clean up before you head home.

Cycling at Bang Phra Lake in Chonburi

We recently visited Bang Phra to look for some cycling tracks and found some pretty good trails, although many were overgrown and difficult to ride through.  We parked the car near the reservoir pumping station and cycled over the embankment of the reservoir heading towards the hills in the background.

About 1km from the reservoir is a large Chinese cemetery with hundreds of domed graves in the unique Chinese style.  There is a very well paved road leading through the cemetery and the there are lots of nice landscaped gardens.

We researched the best cycling route and found the traditional route goes around the lake, however we found an old sign leading up the hill so decided to take that.  The route was fun single track for a few hundred meters however we soon had to push up a very steep and overgrown hill to a small shrine.

From here things got worse and we had to push through thorny bushes / overgrown jungle for about an hour to a rocky outcrop at the top of one of the hills.  The views were nice but hard to justify for all of the pushing and lack of riding!

Another hour of pushing through bamboo which was almost as difficult as the thorns lead us to the summit of the highest of the hills and where the communication towers were concentrated.  There was a steep road leading down from here back to the cemetery.

Whilst there seem to be lots of areas to explore, if you are looking for mountain biking in Chonburi I would recommend Khao Mai Keaw which is not far from here.  The trails are far better maintained and more fun.  I will check out Bang Phra again as the lakeside ride may be nice.

Action Sport Asia features a number of locations for cycling in Thailand as well as other sports and activities.  Please contact us if you have any questions.

Mountain Biking in Chachoengsao

There is a great mountain biking track in Chachoengsao province, just 1 hour from Eastern Bangkok at Wat Suwankhiri (วัดสุวรรณคีรี) in Thai language.  Wat Suwankhiri is located on highway 304 and can be approached from various points depending on where you are.  The general location overview is below.

As you turn into the Wat there is a nice restaurant to park the car and buy refreshments / relax, as you go up the hill towards the Wat itself if can be a bit confusing where to go as there are several unmarked routes, however the monks are eager to assist should you need help.  We took the trail furthest to the left which followed a short dirt trail before ascending steeply to the top of a hill with a few buildings, then came a further hill which was pretty brutal and finally ended at a small shrine.  (pictured)
From here things were a bit confusing, after a short downhill there was the option of going straight, left or right, again with few markings.  We made the mistake of turning right which ends the ride quite quickly but after trying again we turned left to follow the ridge of the hill where there is a single track trail for several km through a mix of rainforest and bamboo forests, the cycling is really nice with a good mix of terrain and technical sections.

Towards the end of the trail (or start depending on where you started the ride) there is a great temple on top of the ridge with great views of the surrounding countryside and a few old buildings and buddha statues.  This is followed by a steep downhill section before entering the grounds of Wat Suwankhiri.

Cycling in Thailand is becoming very popular amongst locals and foreigners and this mountain biking track in Chachoengsao is just 1 of the many tracks featured on Action Sport Asia.
